Articles and Information
Here you will find articles and other information pages that I've either stolen..er...found around the internet, or that I've written myself. Hopefully you will find this information useful or entertaining. If you have some original content that you would like to share with the rest of the homebrewing community, please drop me a line and I'll put a page up for you here on the Boll Weevil Brewery website.
Use the links to the left under the Articles & Info section, or you may read below for a summary of most of them.
Beer Clarifiers: I found this article as I believe a document download somewhere on the internet. I saved it onto my computer and ran across it a while later and do not have a clue who the original author is. Should you know where the original came from, please let me know and I'll give proper credit.
Brew Session: This is an extract brew session, nothing fancy. I thought this might be useful to beginning extract/steeping grain brewers that have a lot of "newbie" questions, like I sometimes still do. :) As with anything, things can be confusing if you've never done them before and a picture is worth a thousand words, so with that in mind here is several thousand words for you. Hopefully this will be helpful to someone.
Beer Labels: Just some pictures of beer labels that I made for some of my brews. I don't usually bottle, but I have these printed out and attached to the peel'n'stick business card magnets and put them on the kegerator above their respective tap head so that my beer mooching guests will know what they are drinking.
Immersion Wort Chiller: This is one of the first things that I made for my homebrewery, an immersion wort chiller. I didn't get any pics of actually making the thing...but af friend of mine needs one so hopefully in the near future I'll update this page with a step by step pictorial guide to making one. This one works very well, especially in the winter and spring when our water temps are low. I can chill down five gallons of hot wort to pitching temperatures in about 15 minutes or so under perfect conditions (with stirring of the wort). I plan to add an automatic wort stirrer to the brew pot lid as soon as I can find an old ice cream motor, so that'll make it even easier to use. When I finally find one...I'll post another article with pictures on how I made that as well.
Munton Malts: This page shows various information about Munton brand of malted barley. I'm sure it's useful to someone. I found it on the internet and saved it on my computer so I thought I'd stick it on a webpage just in case someone wandered by and could use it.
Stir Plate: This is a magnetic stir plate that I made using an old computer fan, some scrap pine wood, and a magnet. This is a relativly simple project to create, and will let you easily build up your yeast counts when making a yeast starter.
Wort Stirrer: This is a wort stirrer that I made using an old ice cream freezer. It ain't pretty, but it gets the job done! This increased the performance of my immersion chiller and frees me up during the chilling process. No more stirring the cooling wort! yeah!!
Igloo Cooler Mash Tun: This page shows my homemade mash tun with a CPVC manifold. I wanted one of the round coolers to use as my mash tun, but hey, this one was donated so the price was right! :-)
