Brew Review #4

Jefferson's Reserve

Jefferson's Reserve Bourbon Barrel Stout, by Bluegrass Brewing Company, Louisville Kentucky.

This is a black beer, as one would expect from a stout...but strangely it poured with almost no head at all. I know that to get a long lasting standing head, stouts are often nitro'd in the can...and in my own I add a bit of special malt to give it some body and head retention...but this brew had almost none. Again that struck me as odd. The aroma of the brew is slightly whiskey smelling...but oddly enough, it alluded my sense of smell when I took a "deep whif" of it...but, with a slow gentle "sniff" it's definately there. A deeper whiff picks up the licorace/molasses smell of the stout itself. Very nice aroma.

The taste of the beer had a good mix of the whiskey and deep roasty malt flavors. Not bad...my first bourbon barrel brew...so it's still a bit odd, but I'm getting used to it. It doesn't seem to be a very "stout" stout, if that makes sense, but it might be the whiskey flavors taking away from the stout flavors...or maybe it's just that the whiskey taste in my beer is so odd that i'm not really paying attention to the stout taste...don't know. Either way...I don't really think I like this brew. I used to love liquer, and probably drank enough whiskey to float a yacht...but, I've thankfully had my fill of it, so for me at least, this beer is a good gift to receive, but I won't be buying it any time soon.

Again...this is just my personal preference, so take it with a grain of salt!
